Advantage Medical Professionals Travel Nurse Spotlight: Tia Heno, LPN

Nurses Week is a yearly celebration beginning on May 6^th and ending on May 12^th that honors the nursing profession. Advantage Medical Professionals celebrates each day of Nurses Week by turning the spotlight on one of our very own healthcare heroes! Read on to learn more about James Scallan, RN.

Who inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?

My grandmother inspired me to become a nurse. Before she passed, she told me that when I was four years old, she had asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. She said I told her I wanted to be “a nurse maw-maw” because I looked up to her. She also reminded me of how I always loved to help people in need.

What is your dream travel destination?

My dream travel destination would be either Africa or Hawaii because they are both so beautiful.

How has nursing changed you for the better?

 Nursing has made me a much better person because it allows me to be able to help and take care of people and that’s my passion. Whether in a hospital, nursing home, or hospice, I know that I am going to make a difference in my patients’ life – even if it’s making them laugh, giving them pain relief, or just allowing them to talk freely about themselves for a minute and have someone just listen.

What are you currently binge-watching?

I don’t watch much television because I work a lot, but I am a big vampire fan so I’m currently binge-watching Vampire Diaries. I’m a kid at heart, so I also love watching Cartoon Network.

What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned in the last month?

The most surprising thing that I have learned in the last month is the value of mental health – meaning if we don’t take time to make sure our own mental health is taken care of, then we will be unable to do our job effectively. Our patients deserve our all.
