Nurses Week is a yearly celebration beginning on May 6th and ending on May 12th that honors the nursing profession. Advantage Medical Professionals celebrates each day of Nurses Week by turning the spotlight on one of our very own healthcare heroes! Read on to learn more about Alexis White, RN.

What initially interested you in travel nursing?

I had been working for my hometown hospital for several years. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and make a big change! I wanted to expand my knowledge and experience as a nurse at other hospitals.

What characteristics do you feel are important to have as a traveling nurse?

As a traveling nurse, you need to have an open mindset and adaptability. Each facility has different policies and procedures for how they do things. You have to adapt to the way that the facility does things to ensure that you are an asset to their place of business. Also, having an open mindset will help aid in the transition to the new facility.

What is the most rewarding part of working in the Med/Surg unit?

Since I’ve been traveling, I have worked as a Med/Surg Telemetry nurse. The most rewarding part of working in this department is that it is very broad. It provides an opportunity to educate patients and their families so that they understand their diagnosis and live a healthier lifestyle. Throughout their hospital stay, you get a first-hand look at how their heart is functioning during the changes that each illness may bring.

What do you think is a common misconception about nurses?

A common misconception is that all nurses work in hospitals and clinics.  In all actuality, a nursing career gives you opportunities to work remotely, mobile, on planes, on helicopters and so much more!

What do you love to do on your days off when you’re not working on an assignment?

I love to spend time with my son. I enjoy taking him to different places where he can be wild and free.
